50 things to do for yourself

It is no surprise that I have learned quite a lot as a young female professional and recent college graduate who has only been let loose in the "real world," for a few months. There is a lot of growing up to be done when transitioning from being an undergraduate student to being a young professional and graduate student. Working two different, professional jobs, starting my MBA and having my own apartment has taught me a lot about what it takes to keep it together in the real world. 

I've learned that success starts with yourself. YOU are the key to success (has DJ Khaled brought up that one yet?)

It is important to respect yourself, be independent, rely on yourself and plan for the future. Only you can ensure your own path to your best self, and I think that all female 20-somethings who are trying to lead a successful life should start with themselves.

So here are 50 things that you can do for yourself:

  1.  Have a budget 
  2.  Create things - write, doodle, craft, whatever makes you happy!
  3.  If you don't have a favorite book, find one 
  4.  Take yourself out on a date
  5.  Be quirky 
  6.  Don't let criticism discourage you
  7.  Find a routine that works for you 
  8.  If you haven't gotten your driver's license yet, get it 
  9.  Find a mantra 
  10.  Be comfortable with yourself
  11.  Be comfortable by yourself 
  12.  Update your resume and LinkedIn profile
  13.  Call your mom 
  14.  Better yet, send your parents a handwritten letter 
  15.  Eat well and eat enough 
  16.  Take care of your body - do yoga, meditate, join a cross-fit gym, get enough sleep, etc. 
  17.  Journal about your life right now - your future self will thank you 
  18.  Find a mentor 
  19.  Be a mentor 
  20.  Register to vote 
  21.  Get to know your area and community - you may happen upon some treasures 
  22.  Invest in one good pair of jeans for the love of God 
  23.  Don't sell yourself short 
  24.  Hang out with your family
  25.  Stay updated on current events - even if you just follow news sources on Twitter 
  26.  Drink enough water 
  27.  Don't waste time with people who aren't worth it - Ain't nobody got time for that 
  28.  Spend money on experiences, not things 
  29.  But also treat yourself to coffee once in a while 
  30.  Never settle in a relationship... EVER 
  31.  Find a hobby 
  32.  Get a credit card 
  33.  De-clutter your life 
  34.  Get enough sleep 
  35.  But don't sleep away your weekends entirely 
  36.  Don't be afraid to have an opinion 
  37.  Cherish your best friends 
  38.  Have an interview-ready outfit that you feel confident in 
  39.  Aim for your dream job
  40.  And don't lose all hope when you don't get your dream job 
  41.  Travel 
  42.  Indulge every once in a while - chocolate, Pinterest binge, an entire Netflix series in one night
  43.  Treat every experience as a learning experience 
  44.  Always have thank you notes on hand 
  45.  Start saving for retirement ASAP 
  46.  Purge your closet and donate what you don't need anymore 
  47.  Learn how to cook for yourself - even if it's just the basics 
  48.  Make mistakes
  49.  Learn from your mistakes 
  50.  Know your worth 
Success starts with you! So take time work towards it.

  2. Love this! I am in a very similar situation to you, except I moved 12 hours away from all friends and family, so its been a adjustment. This might seem trivial, but the first time I went to the movies by myself out here was a proud moment for me. It was like independence and self-love and confidence all at once.
